ANDROTH, a tourist place in Lakshadweep, is the nearest island to the mainland and has an east-west alignment which is quite different from other islands lying in north-south direction. This is the Largest island in the Lakshadweep. The scenic beauty of the place is enhanced by dense vegetation mainly of coconut groves. Androth was the first island where the people embraced the religion Islam. It was Saint Ubaidullah, who its is said , converted the people of islands to Islam. At Androth you will find his tomb at Juma'at Mosque. Britain took control of the islands during the nineteenth century as part of the Empire of India, and the islands remained under India's control after independence. In 1956, all the islands were grouped together as the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. The only historic British lighthouse in the islands is at Minicoy, but since 1967 India has constructed lighthouses or light towers on all the major atolls.
