At the southern tip of South Andaman, an hour's drive from Port Blair, is Chiriya Tapu or Bird Island; a tiny fishing village with mangroves, shell-strewn beaches, sharp rocks and vast coral reefs. South pf the island is a beach well known for snorkelling.

The lush green mangroves, forest cover with numerous chirping birds and the Sylvan Sands and Munda pahar beaches make it an ideal picnic site. The forest guesthouse situated on top of a hillock provides a fabulous view of isolated islands, submerged corals and the breath-taking sunset. Andaman and Nicobar Islands is a picturesque archipelago in The Bay of Bengal, where the nature unfolds itself in all its virgin glory. Abundance of lush green foliage amidst the vastness of the blue ocean makes this group of islands a tourist hotspot. Though a little away from the mainland, Andaman and Nicobar Islands is well connected to the Indian cities Kolkata and Chennai by air and Vishakhapatnam, along with these two cities, by sea route. Chirya Tapu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is a popular bird sanctuary and you can come across a variety kind of birds here. The best time to visit this Bird Island is between May and October. Chirya Tapu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands is situated at the southern tip of the archipelago and is accessible by a motorway. The carriage way from this small fishing village leads to a large bay, through a dense forest, covered by thick bushes and over head creepers.
With the introduction of low fare airlines such as Air Deccan and Jetlite that offers flights to Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands is attracting a large number of Indian as well as foreign tourists to the place. The Indian tourists to this group of islands do not need any official permit but the foreign tourists have to obtain a permit for staying in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
