The Church of the Holy Spirit The church was built here in 1565 and soon after was destroyed and the present building was constructed in 1675. Today it stand as one of the finest examples of the Indian Baroque style and period of church building. This church is the living example of the Baroque architecture. The beautifully carved pulpit depicts the various apostles Just near the church is present the famous Portuguese mansion known as the House of Seven Gables. The pristine white faade consists of Indian Baroque style work and houses heavily decorated altars dedicated to Immaculate Conception of Mary. The interiors are ripe with gilt, crystal and stucco. It was destroyed following the Muslim invasion of the Salcette in 1571, and contruction was begun again only after the area had been firmly secured and funds raised.
Another important place which is located near the church is the Calcada de Nossa de Piedade which leads to Monte Hill from where one can get a good view of the Salcette area. It was home to the mathas of the Vaishnava. The number of mathas grew gradually and gave the name of matha - gram to the place. The outer facade consists of towers on either side with a central dome structure.
This mela is the last major festival prior to the onset Monsoons and is famous throughout Goa. The history of Margao states that the town held its own significance even before the arrival of the Portuguese.
