Tagore Park Tagore Park Samrakshana Samiti and the Mahe Prakriti Samrakshana Samiti said the leasing of the historic park to a Vadakara-based business enterprise for a 15-year period would set a bad precedent. The beautiful park is located newar government houst, Mahe and houses the freedom Fighters neniruak abd the statue of Marianne having hostorical importance of french revolution. Hundreds of people will participate in a dharna in front of the municipal office on April 22 demanding revocation of the decision.
It could set off the practice of leasing similar open lung spaces in cities. The general public would thereby be denied access to these public spaces. The entry (to such parks) would be controlled through payment of fee. Under the lease agreement, which fetches Rs. 5,000 to the civic body a month, more than 30 trees in the park were being cut down for putting up a computer centre for children, beer and ice cream parlours and a massage centre.
